Fine Motor
This week we have been focusing on our fine motor skills to ensure that our fingers are very strong and we are ready to do some super writing as the year progresses. The children were using their strong hands and grip to thread beads onto pipe cleaners to make bracelets. They were all so proud of the bracelets that they made!
Listening Walk
Before we start our Phonics, we have been working on our listening skills. We all participated in a listening walk around school which was super fun! We walked around school and the yard and heard so many different things along the way. We heard birds cheeping, wind blowing, footsteps, talking and cars driving along the road. I think our huge listening ear headbands helped us to listen even more carefully!
Self-Portraits
In reception we love art! The children created some amazing self-portraits using paint. As we painted our face, we discussed the colour of our eyes, hair and skin. The children tried very carefully to control their paintbrush and they all did an amazing job.
Buddy Assembly
On Friday 27th September, Reception and year 6 took part in their buddy assembly. They all did a great job and we are looking forward to watching their relationships build over the year.
Jet and Ben
Reception class had some special visitors. Jet, Ben and PSCO Claire came to visit our class! We had so much fun learning all about the importance of the Police and Police dogs. We loved trying on the uniform and stroking Jet and Ben. We then got to go outside and have a look at the police van. We even heard the sirens, they were so noisy!
Nature Windows
Reception class have been learning all about autumn and the things you might see outside during autumn. We went on an autumn nature hunt in the field and collected lots of different autumn coloured leaves and other pieces of nature. We brought them back to class and used them to create some beautiful nature window decorations for our classroom.

Reception class are really enjoying spending time with their buddies. This week Year 6 came to our class and read their buddies a story. It was lovely to see them engaging with reception children and having some fantastic discussion around the story that they were reading.
Dough Disco
Reception class love dough disco! We are still trying really hard to build up our fine motor skills and we use dough disco all of the time to get ready to write, whilst having fun! We are now amazing at the moves including patting, rolling and squeezing the dough. Well done everyone!
Healthy Eating
We have been learning all about keeping ourselves healthy as part of our All about me topic. We had a great discussion about different foods and whether they were healthy or unhealthy. We then made up our very own healthy packed lunch box. The children showed a great understanding of having a balanced diet and keeping healthy.
Sense of Smell
Reception class have been learning all about their senses. This week we focused on our sense of smell. We used our sense of smell to smell different foods in different cups. We had a go at smelling onion, garlic, orange, lemon, coffee and ginger. The children found some of the smells disgusting and some really nice! We then drew pictures of our favourite smell and one we didn’t like at all.
Yoga
On Thursday 10th October it was Hello Yellow day at school, which focused on Mental Health awareness. As part of this, Reception class did a range of activities to help us relax and switch off, as well as discussing our feelings and who we can talk to in school. On Thursday, we practised some yoga in class. The children really loved it and did a really good job of listening carefully and copying the moves really well. Here are some photos of the children practising some of their yoga moves!

We also talked about how we need to ask the owners before we stroke dogs that we do not know. The children then had a go at stroking a pretend dog, practising how to ask the owner first, letting the dog sniff them and then stroking them on the shoulder. The children really enjoyed the session and learnt lots of new information!
Harvest Prints
In preparation for our Harvest assembly on the 23rd October, we have been learning all about Harvest in class. As part of this, the children used different vegetables to make different sized and shaped prints on their paper.
Room on the Broom
As it is Halloween during the holidays, Reception class have been focusing on the story ‘Room on the Broom’ this week. We have read the story as a class and have learnt the story well so that we can join in with the words when we are reading it. We have discussed the key events in the story and have used pictures of these to sequence the story. We then went outside to collect a stick to make our very own magic wand. We decorated our stick and they all looked beautiful.
Sense of touch
Reception have been continuing to learn all about their senses. This week we have looked at our sense of touch. We felt lots of different materials and textures and discussed how they all felt different. We read a story called ‘Dipal’s Diwali’ and learnt all about the things that happen during Diwali, including lighting lots of lights and candles, tidying houses and having feasts. We then made our own Diya lamps using clay and sequins. The children used the strength in their hands to shape the clay and then decorated them independently. They looked amazing!
Space Artwork
As part of our space topic, the children asked if we could learn all about the different planets we have in our solar system. We have been learning the names of the different planets and learnt a song to help us remember them! We then used a range of materials to create our own planet artwork to go on display in our classroom.
School Nurse Visit
Reception class had a visit from the school nurse. She talked all about brushing our teeth and why this is important. She then discussed the importance of washing our hands and used glitter to represent that germs can spread so easily! We then learnt a song that we can sing when we wash our hands and the children all practised washing their hands effectively before lunch time.
Shape Hunt
In maths we have been learning all about 2D shapes. We have been learning the names of the 2D shapes and also how we can describe them. We have also been spotting shapes in our environment and we went on a shape hunt in our outdoor area. The children found so many different shapes and were very proud of what they found.
Space Adventure
In Reception class we went on an adventure to space!! We started by reading the story ‘Whatever Next’ and we then re-created the story. We made jam sandwiches to take with us on our journey to space and practised safely using the knife to spread the butter and jam onto the bread. We then made space hats to wear so that we didn’t bump our heads on any planets on the way! After that we went into the hall, climbed into our ‘space rockets’ and off we went to space! We used some new technology in school called ‘Now Press Play’ to make us feel like we were really in space!
Polar Express Afternoon
We had a very special afternoon with our buddies on Friday 6th December. We had a Polar Express afternoon where we got into our pyjamas, got our tickets ready and boarded the Polar Express! The children had to use their listening skills to listen to instructions and they were very proud of their finished gingerbread men. They then got to eat them which went down well with the class!
Icy Morning
On Wednesday 18th December it was a very icy morning! We went outside to explore the ice and frost in our outdoor area. The children said the ice was ‘freezing’, ‘cold’ and ‘looked like glass’. We explored how the ice melted when we held it in our hands and what happened when we threw it onto the floor. The children also discovered that with this cold weather the sand turned hard! It had frozen!!

Self portraits
We love art in Reception and this week we painted self-portraits! We each used a mirror and looked carefully to identify the different parts of our faces that we needed to paint.
Fruit Picking
We are very lucky at Copeland Road Primary School to have our very own apple and pear trees. Today we were so excited to pick the fruit from the trees! We also took out our clipboards so that we could do some observational drawing. When we ate the apples we were amazed at how juicy they were! The pears were delicious too!
Pizza please!
One of the children brought in a pizza menu today and enjoyed asking her friends “what are you ordering?” The children were excited about eating pizza during registration – “the pizza is hot” and the “pepperoni is tasty”. Reception also worked together to change the home corner into “a pizza kitchen”.
Child-initiated experiences can allow lots of learning to take place and can help build children’s self-confidence. All the children were engaged and we all enjoyed our morning!
Library Time
Each week we get to spend time in the Library. We love finding our favourite books and discovering new ones, especially the big non-fiction books! We also get to choose a book to take home, it is lots of fun!
Our Buddies
In Reception we are very lucky… we get to have a Year 6 Buddy! Our buddies are very kind and they help us feel happy and safe at school. They help us make new friends too! Each week our buddies come to visit us; they read us stories and play with us. Thank you buddies for all you do!
Autumn adventure
We really enjoyed our walk today… the leaves were crunching, the trees were rustling and conkers covered the field. We filled our pockets with conkers of all shapes and sizes and we were amazed by the vibrant colours of the leaves.
Outdoor choosing
At Copeland Road Primary School we have a safe and engaging outdoor area for the children to explore. The children enjoy digging, mixing and testing out their ideas. The children also have the opportunity to use their imagination for story telling activities. Today we were pirates “trying to find the treasure!”
Pumpkin Soup
In Reception we love stories! Stories help develop our imagination and provide us with ideas for our play activities. Today we read a story called Pumpkin Soup. We enjoyed the story so much that we made our own pumpkin soup in the sensory tray and pumpkin pies too! Some of us acted as monsters, wizards and witches and these are characters from other stories we are enjoying.
Cutting skills
This week we have been practising our cutting skills by cutting out different shapes for our pumpkins’ faces. We cut out triangles for the eyes and stalk and then we designed our own shapes for the mouth. We are really proud of our work because we tried really hard to use the scissors effectively. We hope you like our pumpkins too!
Lest we forget
We have been learning about the soldiers who have fought in the war and we thought it would be a good idea to make poppies to show our respect.
Remember remember the fifth of November
It has been Bonfire Night this week and all the fireworks we have seen have been “big and sparkly” and they “made a bang noise”. We made pictures of the fireworks using glitter for the sparkles and bright coloured paint because we saw lots of “really colourful” fireworks too!
Storyteller
Chris Bostock visited our school today and he shared a wonderful story about a little possum who is trying to get food for his poorly mummy. The children thoroughly enjoyed the story as Chris told the story with enthusiasm and used clapping rhythms to help us feel even more a part of the story. We also were given a challenge… we had to work out what little possum could see when he was looking into water. We went outside and we all looked into a puddle of water and worked out that little possum was scared of his own reflection! So much learning took place for the children today – it has been fantastic to see.
Elf Day
We have had a great day today. We used our imagination and creativity to think of an elf name for each of us; it was very funny being called by our elf names! In the morning we made some elf crispy cakes. It was fascinating to watch the chocolate melt and we took turns to mix the ingredients together. In the afternoon, we enjoyed watching the ‘Elf’ movie whilst eating our delicious elf crispy cakes.
Polar Express Day
One of our favourite stories at Christmas time is The Polar Express. We were so excited to have a Polar Express day at school and this year our Year 6 Buddies joined in with the fun! We changed into our cosy pyjamas, cuddled our teddies tightly and boarded The Polar Express! We enjoyed some hot chocolate and even had a surprise visit from Santa Claus. It was a fantastic day!
Reception enjoying their first Christmas Lunch!
Reception had a wonderful time at their first Christmas Lunch since joining Copeland Road School.
National Chocolate Cake Day!
This afternoon we made chocolate cakes with our Year 6 Buddies! They helped us weigh out the correct ingredients and we took turns with mixing. When we added the cocoa powder it was amazing to see the mixture turning chocolatey and cracking the eggs was so much fun! Thank you Buddies, our cakes tasted delicious!
Icy adventures
Today we explored the icy outdoors! The grass was “crunchy” and the icy leaves and frozen sticks were “stinging to touch”. We couldn’t believe how “frozen” and “hard” the ground had become from the heavy frost. We really enjoy spending time outdoors and connecting with the natural world.
We love the ukulele!
Mrs Torano visited Reception today and brought her guitar too! We named the different parts of a guitar, counted the strings and learnt about “the hole in the middle”. It was amazing sound when Mrs Torano played the guitar and we enjoyed singing songs with her. The best bit of all was when we each played a ukulele! We love music and learning about new instruments, thank you for today Mrs Torano!
The Book With No Pictures by B. J. Novak
We love this story even though it does not have any pictures! To make the book “even more fun”, today we thought it would be a good idea to draw pictures for the book – we really enjoyed it!
The wonderful wind
Today we did a science investigation to learn about wind and air. We experimented with a variety of materials to find out which materials blow in the wind and to help us choose a material for our kites. It was a very windy and brilliant afternoon!
Chinese New Year
Today we tasted some Chinese food in celebration of the Chinese New Year. We tasted some egg fried rice, noddles, prawn crackers and vegetable spring rolls. Some of the food was new to us and we were excited to try new and different foods; the food was “delicious” and “amazing!” Happy Chinese New Year!
National Kite Flying Day, 8th February
To celebrate National Kite Flying Day we made kites. From our wind investigation we worked out a paper bag would be a good material to use for a kite. We used a range of decorating materials and sang the Mary Poppins song Let’s Go Fly a Kite. When we finished making our kites we loved going outside a seeing how high they fly!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
We had a lovely day in Reception today, we made Valentine’s Day cards for people who are special to us and we gave our friends a hug to show our appreciation.

We enjoyed another day with our buddies this time making pancakes. We weighed the flour, cracked the eggs and poured the flour for the perfect pancake mixture! They were very delicious, especially when we added a variety of tasty toppings including blueberries, strawberries and chocolate sauce!
World Book Day
We have dressed up as our favourite story characters for World Book Day today. We shared our books with our friends and loved making a book mark so we don’t lose our page!
Red Nose Day
We have enjoyed our day fundraising for Comic Relief today – look at our great t-shirts and red noses!
Happy Red Nose Day!
All Stars Cricket
We have had a great afternoon practising our cricket skills during an All Stars Cricket session today. We rolled the ball aiming for the wickets and held the cricket bat carefully to dribble the ball from cone to cone. Joining in with sporting activities help us to keep fit, healthy and happy!
International Day of Happiness
Being happy is very important to us. In celebration of International Day of Happiness we spent time with the people who make us feel happy! We also spoke about all the things that make us feel happy during circle time and we continued to spread the happiness by sending home a happy smile to our family and friends!
