Curriculum Map Class 1 – 2019-20
Nature Walk
In Science this term Class 1 are learning about plants. During our Nature walk, we spotted different mini-beasts and plants. We also spent time looking at the vegetables that were planted last year. The pupils found beans, potatoes, pumpkins, tomatoes and beetroots.
Numbers to 10
Class 1 had their first math’s lesson today and have been showing their understanding of numbers to 10 through threading beads to match the number given. Miss Spenceley & Mrs Wells have been really impressed with maths work this week.
Counting to 100
Class 1 enjoying learning to count to 100 and exercise at the same time.
Potato Printing
Last year in reception, Class 1 pupils planted different vegetables. When we came back to school on Wednesday, we were excited to find that these vegetables had grown and Mr Hardy had picked them ready for us. Class 1 tried the beetroot on Friday afternoon and decided they wanted to do some printing with the potatoes.
Planting beans
As part of learning about plants this term, everyone in Class 1 has planted a runner bean. Class 1 discussed what plants need to grow as well as start their bean diary which is where we will record the beans growth overtime.
Henri Rousseau
In Art Class 1 are looking at French artist Henri Rousseau. On Friday we spent time looking at his painting ‘Tiger in a Tropical Storm’ and ‘Monkeys in the Jungle’. Pupils spent time looking at how the majority of the picture is taken up by the plants and how many different plants we could see before practising drawing their own.
The Surprised Tiger!
Class 1 have been learning all about the artist Henri Rosseau and his painting ‘The surprised Tiger’. We have really enjoyed looking at his paintings and noticing how much detail he has put into the plants and trees as well as at the tiger. Pupils used oil pastel colours to create their own surprised tiger and a collage of leaves around using tissue paper. Our artwork is now on display in the school hall. A number of pupils also received head teachers award this week for their brilliant work.
Where in the world are we?
Class 1 have been using Google maps to locate the United Kingdom, Bishop Auckland, West Auckland and Copeland Road Primary. Class 1 used their knowledge of the North East and reading skills to help identify these locations. We are going to continue to look at our locality for the rest of our Geography topic.
Bean Plants
Class 1 could not believe how quickly and how tall their beans had grown over the last 3 weeks. One of the bean plants was nearly as tall as one member of our class. We have really enjoyed looking after our beans in class this term and having them helping us learn about plants.
Feeling Faces
This week we have been looking at how our emotions can be shown on our face. In circle time we discussed how facial expressions can communicate feelings with one another. Pupils then gave different scenarios and practiced putting their feelings on their faces. Can you guess what the pupils of Class 1 are feeling?
Leaf Survey
Today Class 1 carried out a leaf survey. Pupils collected 5 leaves each and brought them back to class. In class pupils discussed the type of leaves they had and created a pictogram to show their findings.
Creating a rain gauge
Today Class 1 learnt about how we can measure rainfall. The class made their own rain gauge to measure the rainfall over the week.
Songs & stories
Pupils at songs and stories enjoyed reading and listening to superhero stories. Pupils created their own superhero mask and came up with their own superhero name.

Curriculum Map 2018-2019 Class 1
Visit to St Helen’s Church
Class 1 visited St Helen’s Church as part of our RE topic ‘What can we learn from visiting a church?’. Father McTeer showed us around the church and the different features that a church has. Everyone had the opportunity to ask questions and even ring the church bells.
Planting beans
In Science this term Class 1 have been learning about plants, their functions and what a plant needs to grow. Every member of the class planted a bean and watered their bean each day.
These pictures show how tall the bean plants were after 7 weeks! Some of them were nearly as tall as some members of our class!
Outdoor Maths
This week in Maths we have been looking at position and direction including full turns, half turns and quarter turns. The children showed these different directions individually then worked in pairs to direct each other using this terminology.
The Naughty Bus
In Geography we have been reading the ‘Naugthy Bus’ who loves to hide. This week he left clues to find him hiding in the school yard and a birds eye map for the children to find him. The children then drew their own birds eye view map of the classroom and where they would hide the Naughty Bus.
Story Telling
Class 1 really enjoyed our visit from Chris Bostock who is a story teller. The children learned how to retell a story using actions. In class we are making a story map with the actions so we can retell the story individually.
Senses – Taste
This term we are exploring our different senses. Today we looked at our sense of taste and tried different foods. The class were given the different tastes, sour, sweet, bitter and salty and had to match these to the different foods. Our favourite tastes were sweet and salty.
Bonfire night
Art one have been experimenting with paint this week and creating movement with colour by blowing through straws.
Place value in teen numbers
Class 1 using multilink to support their understanding of how many tens and ones make a teen number.

The First Christmas
Class 1 dressed in their nativity costumes for Key Stage 1’s production of ‘The First Christmas’.
Number bonds to 20
This week we have been looking at our bonds to 20 and how using our knowledge of our bonds to 10 helps us find our bonds to 20. Class 1 were set the task of finding different bonds to 20 to help a pirate find which treasure is from which treasure chest.
Grandad’s Island
In Art Class 1 have been looking at printing, in this lesson we focused on finger printing to form patterns and sponge printing on leaves. The Class have made pictures of animals and plants seen in the jungle. This is linked with our writing this term which is based around the story ‘Grandad’s Island’.
Classroom Display
This term we have been looking at number bonds Class 1 created a number bond to 20 display to help this pirate.
Class 1 have also been thinking about their targets this term and made their own personal targets.
Book time
Class 1 spending time looking through their favourite books and sharing these with the rest of the class.
Palm Sunday
Designing Billie Bear’s Umbrella
Class 1 have carried out an experiment to find which material would be most suitable for Billie Bear’s umbrella. The children made predictions before creating their umbrellas in groups. The class tested, paper, cardboard, tin foil and cling film. They found that cling film and tin foil were the two materials which kept Billie dry.
Science Week – How far can a sneeze travel?
During Science week Class 1 took part in the sneeze zone activity. The children used a spray bottle to use as the nose and then measured how far the water droplets travelled. The class were surprised to see how far germs can travel when you sneeze and how this can infect other people.
Class 1’s Castle Assembly
Class 1 shared what they have been learning about Castles this term with the rest of the school and families. This included drama, singing and dancing. Well done Class 1 for your hard work.
Raby Castle Visit
As part of our history topic ‘Castles’ Class 1 visited Raby Castle and enjoyed a tour of the Castle and its surroundings. The pupils impressed the tour guides with their knowledge of Castles and were able to spot defences features as well as talk about the roles of those who lived or worked in a Castle.
Multiplication problems
Pupils worked in groups to solve a range of multiplication problems. Pupils placed their counters on sheets then grouped into either 2s or 5s, then counted in 2s or 5s to find the answers.

Jack and the Beanstalk
Class 1 have enjoyed reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children have written about the story and planted their own beans. During their science lesson the children have made predictions on how high their own beans will grow.
No pen day
Class 1 learnt about 2D shapes on ‘No Pen Day’ and created their own 2D shape creatures. The children also re-told the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ using lots of drama and exciting language.
Maths Garden
In Class 1 they are all busy working on their number bonds.
Judaism
In RE this term we have been learning about Judaism, to finish of our topic we learnt about Shabbat and how this is an important day for Jewish people as this is the day of rest in a week. Shabbat is celebrated by drinking fruit juice and eating Challah a plaited bread. Class 1 showed great enthusiasm and enjoyed tasting the juice and bread.
Fizzing Fireworks!
Giant footprints!
Class 1 came into maths to find some dinosaur and giant (from Jack and the Beanstalk) footprints! The children were set the task of using non-standard units (cubes) to measure and compare the lengths of the footprints. We found out that the Giant’s footprint was 27 cubes long and we compared this to our own feet. Some of the children’s feet were only 6 or 7 cubes long!

Naughty Bus
Class 1 have been reading the Naughty Bus and finding out about his travels around the country. Today the Naughty Bus had hidden in the school, he left clues for the children to find a map to show where he was hiding.
The children used their map reading skills to successfully find the Naughty Bus hiding outside the classroom!
The class hid the Naughty bus again and created their own map to show where the Naughty buses new hiding place is.
Class 1 using tens frames to solve missing number bond problems!
Materials
Class 1 are learning about materials this term. This week they have been sorting materials according to their properties. The class were given a range of different materials. In these pictures they sorted them into hoops using the criteria ‘soft‘ and ‘hard‘. They then thought of their own criteria to sort the materials into later in the lesson for example rough, smooth, shiny and bumpy.
What’s the time Mr Wolf?
Class 1 have enjoyed telling the time to the hour and half past the hour. The children have worked hard in identifying the minute hand and hour hand and understanding the difference between these.

Our five senses
Gymnastics Festival
Class 1 took part in a dance/gymnastic festival with other schools in the area. The children worked hard on their gymnastic skills and incorporated different stretches, rolls and ways of travel that they have learnt this term into a great routine.
Animal Stories
In Science Year 1 are learning about classifying animals. Class 1 had a visit from Martin from Animal stories. Martin brought, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and a bird. We all had the chance to hold each animal even the snake! We had a great afternoon!
DT – Making Castles
This term our topic in History has been Castles. We linked this topic to our DT project which was making structures and each child made a Castle. They included a lot of the features of a castle.
Outdoor Art
Class 1 exploring textures through rubbing a range of surfaces in the playground.
Measuring
Class 1 measuring the weight of objects in the classroom using uniform non-standard units (cubes).
Comparing
Class 1 using cups to compare how much containers can hold as well as fill different containers to match to labels given e.g. half full, nearly empty, full and nearly empty.
Chicks
In Class 1 we have loved having 6 little chicks in class! The children have enjoyed learning about the life cycle of a hen and have used lots of descriptive language to describe the chicks.
Each child held a chick and were surprised at how fluffy and small they were. After the weekend we were shocked to see how big they had grown in three days!
The children helped to feed and make sure there was enough water for the chicks throughout the school day and made sure they worked very quietly so we didn’t disturb their naps!
Class 1’s Assembly – The Animal Kingdom
This term class 1 have been learning all about different animal types. The children performed the ‘Animal Kingdom’ assembly to the rest of the school and parents to share lots of interesting facts. The children danced and sang to different animal songs and ended with a class dance to the circle of life.
