Maths at Copeland Road
Our Maths leader is Mrs Musgrave.
Our Maths governor is Mr Nodding.
Our Philosophy:
Here at Copeland Road Primary School, we strive to develop ’problem solving mathematicians’. We want children to embrace mathematical questions and challenges and have a bank of strategies to solve these with. We use a mastery approach towards the teaching of mathematics. This ensures that all of our pupils have the opportunity to master skills and to gain a greater depth of understanding. During lessons, we challenge our children by digging deeper into mathematical concepts and ideas rather than moving children onto new content. We believe that problem solving is a life skill and aim to expose children to these problems within their maths learning to ensure they have strategies to solve real-life problems in the future. This links to our school values and ‘Gem Powers’.
Our curriculum:
We use the White Rose Maths scheme of learning as the basis of our mathematics curriculum at Copeland Road Primary School. The scheme of learning is a clear, time-linked and planned strategically for learning. The scheme is written for all year groups and covers the whole school year of learning.
For each year group, the scheme of learning includes an overview of the maths that your child should be learning at any point in the year. Each year is split into three terms (Autumn, Spring and Summer), and each term comprises individual blocks of learning about a particular topic.
You’ll notice at Copeland Road Primary School that we spend lots of time building strong number skills in our curriculum. These essential core skills lay a solid foundation for more complicated learning later on.
We’ve divided each block of knowledge into a series of small learning steps. Together, these small steps cover all the curriculum content that your child needs to know.
Cognitive science tells us that children will remember more by learning maths in small, related chunks. White Rose has used the best available research to map out the crucial learning steps that will children to understand what they are learning clearly.
Our teachers use the White Rose scheme of learning the basis of how they teach maths. We teach maths every day; learning time includes practise and the development of factual, conceptual and procedural knowledge.
Lessons involve using a mixture of concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches in order to make connections and expose the underlying structure of the mathematics.
We do go beyond the White Rose scheme to make sure our curriculum is right for our pupils. Our maths lessons are structured so that children have daily learning and practise of key mathematical facts i.e. number bonds, times tables to develop number fluency and rapid recall of key facts.
In addition, embedded in the Maths daily classroom routines, previous learning is revisited in Locked in Learning Activities designed to recall previous learning from last lesson / last week / last unit / last year. This is used to keep learning fresh and gives the opportunity for interleaving to cover some less frequently taught units. We also use a ‘Fast 4’ approach to ensure our children have rapid recall of number facts. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 also take part in the Mastering Number programme which aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children.
The long term plan for Maths mostly follows White Rose Maths (https://whiterosemaths.com/resources/primary) as well as the National Curriculum.
